Triumph Motorcyles and housebuilding firm owner John Bloor is the county’s richest person, according to the latest edition of the Sunday Times Rich List. The annual survey of the nation’s multi-millionaires – in the paper on Sunday – estimated Mr Bloor’s wealth at £3.39 billion.

It made him the fourth richest person/family in the Midlands, though his fortune was reportedly down £92 million on the previous year. Top of the regional list were Lord Bamford and family, owners of JCB, whose wealth rose by £1.75 billion last year to £7.65 billion.

They were followed by Bet365 owners, the Coates family, with £7.467 billion and Sports Direct founder Mike Ashley, at £3.799 billion. Among multi-millionaires aged under 40, the region’s wealthiest was Gymshark owner Ben Francis, on £725 million.

The Sunday Times list showed the largest fall in the billionaire count in the guide’s 36-year history, from a peak of 177 in 2022 to 165 this year. This year’s list of 350 individuals and families together hold a combined wealth of £795.361 billion – a sum larger than the annual GDP of Poland.

Robert Watts, compiler of the list, said: “This year’s Sunday Times Rich List suggests Britain’s billionaire boom has come to an end. Many of our home-grown entrepreneurs have seen their fortunes fall and some of the global super rich who came here are moving away.

“Thousands of British livelihoods rely on the super-rich to some extent. We’ll have to wait and see whether we have now reached peak billionaire, and what that means for our economy.

“These may be harder times to create wealth, but The Sunday Times Rich List continues to unearth entrepreneurs building fortunes in diverse and often surprising ways. This year’s new entries include people who have made money from artificial intelligence and virtual worlds as well as plumbing supplies and teaching aides.

“We know many readers find such people, especially those from humbler backgrounds, very inspiring.” The 2023 list put Mr Bloor at 54th overall in the country.

Other local entrepreneurs expected to feature this time include Sir Will Adderley and family, the founders of Dunelm. Their net total of £1.885 billion in the 2023 list put them 92nd nationally.

Carphone Warehouse founder David Ross, who owns Nevil Holt Hall, near Market Harborough, featured in the 2023 list at no. 240, with £700 million to his name. Mahmud Kamani and family, who own Boohoo, which has announced the closure of its Thurmaston factory, were at 249, with £675 million.

David Wilson and family, owners of Coalville construction group Wilson Bowden, were at 261 in the 2023 list, with £600 million.
