Motorists have been hit with lengthy traffic delays on a major route following an incident involving the fire brigade.

Tailbacks have been caused on a stretch of the A19 on Bank Holiday Monday following reports of a car on fire. Firefighters were seen on the route near to The Silverlink in North Tyneside at around 4pm.

A spokesperson for the Tyne and Wear Rescue Service confirmed they were called out to "reports of a car fire" but were unable to provide further information. It is understood there were no reported injuries and the North East Ambulance Service did not attend the scene.

Traffic delays have also been occurring near to the Tyne Tunnel over the weekend due to maintenance works. The northbound route is closed until 6am on Tuesday, May 7. While the works are being carried out, the southbound tunnel will operate as bi-directional to accommodate travel both northbound and southbound.
