Lidl has given an update on its plans to open a new store in North Wales. The German discounter is developing a supermarket on Connah's Quay High Street, relocating from its current unit at Deeside Retail Park.

The store will be at the former Co-op store and planning was secured back in 2022. Demolition work at the new location started this year and the existing store is now up for sale.

This week Lidl GB confirmed the start of regeneration works at the site. They said it is set to open by the end of the year. Other Lidl target towns are listed at the bottom of the story.

A spokesperson said: "Through a significant multi-million-pound investment, construction of the new store, which follows the completion of demolition works late last year, will completely transform the dilapidated site which many considered an eyesore. Creating up to 40 new jobs for the local community, the new Lidl will provide shoppers with access to the discount supermarket’s quality products at affordable prices.

"It’s 1,334 m2 sales area will feature the much-loved Lidl bakery, which was recently crowned the most popular supermarket bakery in the UK with a market share of 18.2%, beating Tesco and Sainsburys. Customers will also have access to 160 car parking spaces, including disabled, parent & child spaces as well as Electric Vehicle Charing points in the car park."

Lidl GB’s Regional Head of Property, Stuart Jardine, added: “This is a brilliantly located site that acts as a gateway to the town, forming many people’s first impressions of the area. Over time it’s unfortunately fallen into disrepair therefore, we’re really excited to have the opportunity to revitalise the space and make it somewhere that residents can be proud of.

“We are sincerely grateful to the Connah’s Quay community for their patience, understanding and support during this stage of the new store’s development. Whilst a bit of disruption can never be entirely avoided, our team will work hard to ensure that it is kept to a minimum and we get the new store open as soon as possible so that shoppers can start benefitting from Lidl’s high-quality products at the best value prices.”

It is all part of a plan by Lidl to expand the brand and improve its store offer in the region. The German firm currently has 960 UK stores but wants to see that increase to 1,100 by the end of 2025.

When it published its most recent list of target towns there were six sites listed in North Wales. These are:

  • Abergele

  • Caernarfon

  • Chester (including Broughton)

  • Flint

  • Llandudno

  • Rhyl
