Netflix's My Life With The Walter Boys has become our latest unexpected obsession of 2023, what can we say? We just love a teen drama. And this one has it all. From a fierce rivalry between Jackie (Nikki Rodriguez) and Erin (Alisha Newton), to classic high school dilemmas, and of course a tense and dramatic love triangle between Jackie and Alex (Ashby Gentry) and Cole (Noah LaLonde). And now the creator of the series, Melanie Halsall, has revealed who she actually wanted Jackie to be with and her answer may surprise you.

In case you haven't seen the series yet, Jackie is a 15-year-old who finds herself moving to rural Colorado from New York, after her family is devastatingly killed in a tragic accident. She moves in with her legal guardians The Walters and their eight children, and two cousins. As she adjusts to small town life, Jackie is also drawn into a love triangle with her adoptive brothers Alex and Cole (just to be clear they are in no way physically related).

Spoilers ahead! By the end of the series Alex and Jackie are together, but in the final episode Alex drunkingly tells Jackie he loves her and she doesn't say it back. Awks. That same evening Jackie discovers Cole has fixed her late sister's teapot and she thanks him and kisses him in the barn. While it's not explicitly said, it appears that in kissing Cole, she's effectively chosen him.

However, Jackie ends up going back to New York with her uncle, so things are a little bit left up in the air as to who Jackie is with.

Melanie Halsall has now revealed when adapting the series from the novel its inspired by of the same name by Ali Novak, she initially didn't want Jackie to end up with either of the brothers and wanted the storyline to focus on Jackie choosing herself.

Speaking to Variety, Halsall explained: "In the book, she’s with Alex for quite some time, then they split up and it’s quite mutual. Then she and Cole decide they’re going to be together once she comes back from New York. I knew I didn’t want to do that.

“The thought I had in my head was that she wouldn’t up with either boy — that she’s a successful young woman, striving out on her own, without a romance. So that was one idea.”
