Lightning Flashes During Major Snowstorm in Buffalo Area

A winter thunderstorm hammered parts of western New York overnight into Friday, November 18, as the area braced for “potentially historic” snowfall, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

This footage from Joe Leo, taken shortly after midnight in Blasdell, south of Buffalo, shows flashes of lightning and thick snow on the ground.

The NWS said they received multiple reports of thundersnow in the area at around 1am Friday following an “intense” band of lake-effect snow. Snowfall rates of three inches of snow per hour were possible through the day, they said. Credit: Joe Leo via Storyful
