It seemed like the only logical conclusion.

When Hannah Simpson, then 11 years old, from New Zealand was told she she could not have a horse because it was too expensive, she turned to her cow for help.

She decided that the only she way could practice her equestrian skills was with her cow Lilac.

Hannah has posted various videos of Lilac, a Swiss Brown, in action on her social media pages, including some of the cow jumping over a large log.

“Lilac was only six months then and I was just a midget,” Hannah told the Guardian.

“It was a dare from my brother to jump on and she seemed OK with it so we kept going. Before then I’d only ridden a pony twice, and a sheep.”

The cow can jump as high as four feet.

Now a teenager, Hannah has been given a horse to compete in shows with, but it seems that, now and again, she still enjoys a gallop with Lilac, but said she had no plans to compete professionally with the cow.

“I don’t think she would behave if we took her anywhere but home. And I don’t need to compete. She is more special than a horse, more rare,” she said.

Hannah comes from Invercargill, in the south of New Zealand.
