Gladstone wore the Polo Ralph Lauren x Naiomi Glasses wool coat. The coat featured the iconic Ralph Lauren stripes and a band of bright turquoise with a pattern of a four-directional crosses in yellows and oranges. Beneath the coat, Gladstone fashioned a navy dress with a wrap belt and statement earrings designed with a flower and intricate beading. She finished the look off with gold sandal heels.
The coat comes courtesy of part two of the Polo Ralph Lauren x Naiomi Glasses collection, titled “Color in Motion,” which is the inaugural collaboration of the Ralph Lauren Artist in Residence program. The collection, with a first drop of designs that originally launched in December 2023, honors Navajo heritage and centuries-old weaving traditions.
The first installment of the collection featured earthy tones and emphasized the craft of The Diné (Navajo) textile artist. “My brother and I are among a few young weavers who are bringing that style back,” Glasses said at the time of the first collection’s debut.
“What we as Diné used to weave back before the trading posts came in and influenced our way of weaving [were] a lot of motifs like four-directional crosses and Spider Woman crosses. For me, the four-directional cross is representative of the four directions and how in Navajo culture we hold four as a sacred number.” This second half of the collection abandons neutral hues in favor of brighter colors, partially inspired by Glasses’ love of skateboarding.
With every red carpet appearance Gladstone has made since her breakout performance in 2023’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” she’s taken the opportunity to highlight the artisans and designers of the indigenous community. At the Los Angeles premiere of “Under the Bridge,” Gladstone wore a patterned cape by designer Himikalas Pamela Baker, who is a member of the Musgamakw Dzawada’enuxw, Tlingit, Haida and Squamish tribes.
The Polo Ralph Lauren x Naiomi Glasses’ “Color in Motion” collection features 24 designs of women’s, men’s and unisex styles in bold colors and Glasses’ own interpretation on Navajo motifs, like the four-directional crosses. “I pulled a lot of inspiration from different parts of our surroundings. When I look at some of the designs, it almost feels like home to me,” Glasses said of the designs.
