Linda Perry Reveals She's Only Watched “Linda Perry: Let It Die Here” Documentary Once (Exclusive)
"Then I just saw it the other night and I was like — there's certain parts I couldn't watch," Perry says of the documentary that puts her in the spotlight
Linda Perry: Let It Die Here premiered Thursday at the Indeed Theater at Spring Studios for the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival.
Don Hardy's documentary film on musician and producer Linda Perry features interviews from Dolly Parton, Christina Aguilera, Kate Hudson and Brandi Carlile, as well as Perry's ex-wife, actress Sara Gilbert. The two are now close friends.
At the June 6 premiere, the celebrated musician exclusively tells PEOPLE that she had only seen the documentary once before the Tribeca premiere, noting her first viewing was of "a different edit."
"Then I just saw it the other night and I was like — there's certain parts I couldn't watch," she explains. "It's so raw and it's very honest. So it's very hard to really, and I look at her — I call her her [referring to herself] and I just want to hug her."
"Sometimes I go, 'Oh my God, somebody put her out of her misery,'" she confesses. "It is one of those types of films where it's just like, I'm just struggling through the whole thing and it is really telling for me."
The songwriter notes for PEOPLE that the project "helps [her] understand [herself]," explaining that when she watched it, "[she] was like, 'Oh, that's what's going on with me.'"
Perry reveals that she has no intention of watching it with audiences, clarifying that she doesn't "need to see anybody's reaction."
Along with confessing to PEOPLE that she's only seen the documentary once before the premiere, Perry also opens up about bringing her child Rhodes, 9, to the premiere.
The former 4 Non Blondes lead singer and Gilbert have joint legal custody of their child Rhodes. The Conners star and Perry first started dating in 2011 and got married three years later in 2014. The pair separated in August 2019 following nearly six years of marriage and finalized their divorce in October 2021 citing irreconcilable differences.
Perry tells PEOPLE that her child has a bit of the creative gene, noting how the 9-year-old "loves acting." And she adds that the musician's child's favorite singer is Cher, her "No. 1 fan."
Rhodes exclusively tells PEOPLE that they love the superstar because she's "cool" but doesn't have a favorite Cher song because they're a "true fan," with Perry adding, "True fans don't have favorites."
Perry previously told PEOPLE in 2020 that she believes “everything happens for a reason” and that she and Gilbert “are evolving into something else.”
“All I can do is continue my journey,” Perry told PEOPLE in 2020. She added that there “is much love” between the two.
