Line of Duty and Born to Kill star Daniel Mays is switching drama for comedy as he joins the cast of Dave sitcom Porters.

Mays, who also appeared in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, has landed a role in the show's second season, which begins filming today (July 16).

Written by Dan Sefton, Porters follows wannabe doctor Simon (Ed Easton) who plans to achieve his dream by first becoming the best porter the NHS has ever seen.

On the first day of his new job, he taken under the wing of Karma-loving, German born Tillman (Rutger Hauer) and black-market-Chinese-Viagra-selling Frankie (Susan Wokoma), and tracks his first few months as a porter at St Etheldreda's hospital as he comes into contact with eccentric staff and patients alike.

"I'm thrilled to be working on these hilarious scripts and joining the hugely talented cast of Porters series 2," Mays said of his casting. "Not to mention re-teaming with the brilliant director Vadim Jean who gave me my very first break, way back when!"

Porters will be returning for a full run following a three-part pilot series that aired last year and featured special guest appearances from Gavin and Stacey's Mat Horne and actual Kelsey Grammer.

Also confirmed to be taking part in the second season of the show are Ed Easton, Susan Wokoma, Claudia Jesse, James Atherton, Tanya Franks and Sanjeev Bhaskar.

There's no confirmation on whether Rutger Hauer will be returning just yet, but Digital Spy understands that discussions are ongoing and we're keeping everything crossed.

"It's really exciting to be able to confirm the return of Porters for a full series," said UKTV's senior commissioning editor, Pete Thornton, in a statement earlier this year.

"The first three episodes set out the show's credentials as a highly original comic creation and we're very much looking forward to witnessing the cast's further adventures via the fertile imagination of one of the UK's most successful and prolific writers of recent years."

Porters returns for series two on Dave later in 2018.
