There's a long wait ahead until AC-12 returns for a sixth series of Line of Duty, but rest assured the drama's creator, Jed Mercurio, is working hard on new episodes.

So hard, in fact, that new characters are already fleshed out, cast, and potentially even written completely.

Jed made the exciting admission on Twitter, giving fans a sneak peek at his reunion with Adrian Dunbar, Martin Compston, Vicky McClure, and some mysterious special guests.

Teasing at least two new arrivals for Line of Duty's sixth series, Jed wrote: "#LineofDuty Series 6 team @Vicky_McClure, @martin_compston and The Gaffer Adrian Dunbar nervously awaiting arrival of secret guest stars".

Now we're sucking diesel, fellas.

Jed's latest update follows the news that series six is well and truly in "the planning stage" and may return sooner than fans initially hoped.

Although he refused to confirm a return date more specific than '2020', Jed appeared confident that an official premiere date is around the corner. "That's something that we have at the planning stage, so we are working towards a date," he said.

"We can't confirm everything until things are in place."
