Line of Duty star Martin Compston has revealed that there are "no plans at all" for another series.

Speaking to The Sun, the actor said that the hit BBC show, which also stars Vicky McClure and Adrian Dunbar, might never return to our screens, after a break of more than two years since the last series.

"Genuinely, there’s no plans at all," he said. "We all love each other more than just colleagues now, they’re some of my dearest friends, and we’d all love to work together at some point, but there’s no plans."

Line of Duty’s dramatic series six finale broke ratings records, becoming the most-watched drama of the 21st century. But Compston, who plays Steve Arnott, argues that this is a reason not to return to the world of AC-12.

He said: "I don’t think Jed [Mercurio, the show’s creator] would ever write it for the sake of writing it, it would have to be with a story. We went out on such a high in terms of [viewing] figures; maybe it’s the best way to leave it. I know that’s probably not what people want to hear.

"Never say never but with these things, the longer you leave it… but we still speak, if not daily, weekly, all of us. I miss hanging out with all of them. It was a great feeling being able to go to work with people you call best friends every day."

The crime drama, which centres around uncovering corruption within the police, is yet to be recommissioned by the BBC.

Back in September, Compston teased the name of the cast’s WhatsApp group on his podcast Restless Natives, which gave fans hope that the show was set to return.

"We have got a WhatsApp group that was ‘Line of Duty 6' and a while ago Jed changed the name of it to 'Line of Duty 7'."

Line of Duty is streaming on BBC iPlayer, and DVD and Blu-ray boxsets are also available to buy now.
