Line of Duty star Martin Compston has shared a "complicated" update on the future of the show.

The actor has played DS Steve Arnott in the BBC police series since 2012 alongside co-stars Vicky McClure and Adrian Dunbar, but after season six aired in 2021, the show has been on an indefinite hiatus.

While there has been constant speculation about a potential seventh season, during an interview with the Mirror, Martin shared some disappointing news about the future of AC-12.

"I'm sorry," he said. "[Vicky and Adrian] are some of my closest friends, we all love Jed [Mecurio, the show's creator], and we'd all love to work together at some point but there are no immediate plans.

"It's just getting us all together and stuff. We'd like to but yeah, these things are a bit complicated. But there are no immediate plans."

Last year, the actor revealed that the trio, plus Jed, had a conversation about a future series, although he admitted that he liked the way the last season ended.

"It is definitely on the table," he said. "But I also liked the way it wrapped up. We had a long talk about it and we all said that we'd be up for doing one more. One last one."

Martin is returning to the pitch once again for the annual Soccer Aid match in June, which each year raises money for UNICEF UK.

"I was coach last year," he said. "It's more nerve-wracking being at the side of the pitch knowing you couldn't affect it so I'm delighted to be putting my boots on again this year at Stamford Bridge, we always have a good time here. It's a brilliant stadium to play in so I'm really excited."

Meanwhile, Martin is set to lead a new psychological thriller series titled Fear for Prime Video, which is currently filming in Glasgow and which will premiere on the platform next year.

All seasons of Line of Duty are available to stream now on BBC iPlayer. Soccer Aid will air on ITV1 and ITVX on Sunday, June 9.
