Liverpool have been handed a blow in their reported transfer pursuit of Benfica star Joao Neves.

The Reds continue to be linked with several potential new signings this summer with the transfer window officially open. Arne Slot is the new head coach at Anfield and will already be busy assessing his squad ahead of the Premier League campaign.

Recent days have seen Liverpool linked with centre-backs, with Lille's Leny Yoro emerging as a target this summer. There have also been reports that the Reds could strengthen their midfield ahead of the new campaign, with Neves apparently a target.

Reports from Correio da Manha earlier this week claimed that Liverpool were ready to step up their interest in signing Neves. Now a fresh article has emerged stating that the Reds will face new competition for the Benfica midfielder's signature.

According to A Bola, Paris Saint-Germain have joined the race to sign Neves. The report claims that the Ligue 1 club recently held talks over a proposed move, but are yet to make an official offer.

It has been stated that Benfica are under the impression that PSG will make an official bid to sign Neves in the near future. It remains to be seen, though, if the offer will meet Benfica's asking price.

Neves is reported to have a €120 million (£102 million) release clause in his contract with the Portuguese club. The report goes on to say that Benfica have already rejected two offers in the region of €60 million (£51 million) for Neves.

Manchester United have also been mentioned as showing an interest in Neves, with reports suggesting the Old Trafford outfit are one of the clubs to have a bid rejected for the midfielder. It remains to be seen where Neves will be playing his football next season, with the midfielder contracted to Benfica until 2028.
