New Liverpool transfer focus as Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon stance forces rethink

Liverpool are ready to switch their attentions from Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon by targeting Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville this summer, according to reports.

The Reds, who are set to welcome new manager Arne Slot to Merseyside to replace Jurgen Klopp in the coming weeks, had been credited with interest in Magpies star Gordon. Newcastle are highly unlikely to enterain such interest, of course, but with financial fair play restrictions as they are, a mammoth bid could have caused some consideration on Tyneside.

While every player has their price in the current climate, Gordon is expected to be well out of most sides' budget, with the England interational again showing his talent with a goal and another impressive peformance in Newcastle's 3-2 defeat to Manchester United on Wednesday night.

However, Liverpool are now reported to be lining up a move for Leeds' young Dutch star Summerville. The 22-year-old has been instrumental in their promotion push under Daniel Farke, scoring 19 times in 44 Championship appearances, and contributing a further nine assists. He was named Championship player of the season, and is valued at around £35m.

Much will depend on whether Leeds can clinch promotion back to the Premier League, of course, with Farke's men in action tonight in their play-off semi-final second-leg against Norwich City at Elland Road.

While Summerville and Slot both have Feyenoord connections - Slot currently manages the Eredivisie side while Summerville joned Leeds from the Rotterdam club, the two have not worked together before, with Slot reported to be a big fan of the winger.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are determined to hang on to their top players thus summer, despite interest in Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak. United are thought to be keen to securing deals for defenders Lloyd Kelly and Tosin Adarabioyo.
