The North East took to the polls yesterday and the results are now in - who won the three mayor elections that took place in our region? Here's what you need to know.

Voters had their say on who would be the Tees Valley Mayor, North East Mayor and York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority Mayor on May 2.

Following a hectic day of counts, the winners have finally been declared.

Here's who won and a full breakdown of votes.

Tees Valley Mayor

Ben Houchen - Conservative

Incumbent Tory Mayor Ben Houchen secured his third term in power with a majority of 18,789.

Following the announcement, Lord Houchen said he was "humbled" and thanked those who voted for him on a "positive" campaign.

However, Houchen won the vote with a reduced majority from 2021 - and only beat opponent Chris McEwan by a couple of thousand votes in towns including Hartlepool.

North East Mayor

Kim McGuinness - Labour

Labour's pick Kim McGuinness is now the first ever North East Mayor.

McGuinness, who was formerly the Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, secured a majority of nearly 60,000 votes following a tight race between her and Independent Jamie Driscoll.

The 38-year-old, also a former councillor in Newcastle, said the election marked a “really big moment for the North East as we take the first step to taking control of our own future”.

She pledged to turn the North East into the “real home of opportunity” with new jobs and green industries and major public transport overhaul, including bringing privatised bus services back under public control.

Labour's Kim McGuinness voted first North East Mayor

York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority Mayor

David Skaith - Labour

Labour's David Skaith is the first ever York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority Mayor.

The turnout for the election was 29.89 per cent from the 640,012 people who are registered to vote in York and North Yorkshire.

Following the result, a Labour Party spokesman said the result was “truly historic”, adding: “Keir Starmer’s Labour Party is now winning in Rishi Sunak’s backyard.

“The Prime Minister’s own constituents have taken a look at the two parties and chosen Labour.”
