From Local Gems to Faraway Lands: Must-Visit Getaway Spots to Unwind After Awards Season

After the stress of last year’s double Hollywood strikes and between overlapping awards shows, treat yourself to a getaway. With the Golden Globes, Critics Choice and delayed Emmys all in January, followed by the SAG Awards in February and Oscars in March — not to mention the return of hundreds of scripted television shows — there’s no better time to jet set.

If you’re located in New York City or Los Angeles, you don’t have to go very far — or break the bank — to disconnect.

For staying close to the West Coast

If you’re looking for a weekend away — or even a night — a trip to Newport Beach could be the perfect destination. Just an hour’s drive south of Los Angeles, Lido House has both hotel rooms and cottages. Ojai Valley Inn, about 75 miles northwest of L.A., stretches along 220 acres, perfect for a peaceful, relaxing trip away with multiple pools, pet-friendly accommodations and seven dining options. Want to stay even closer? Check out Santa Monica’s Shutters on the Beach.

For those looking to get out of California but hoping to stay in (or around!) the Pacific time zone, you’re in luck. Here are a few just a short flight away from Los Angeles.

Resorts World Las Vegas

If your idea of a getaway is some gambling, a nice spa or a concert, Resorts World Las Vegas has a bit of everything. It’s one of the newest hotels on the strip (opened in summer 2021) and staying here will mean not having to walk outside. From Michelin-star concepts and chefs and both a day club and nightclub to seven different pool experiences and a 27,000-square-foot spa, Resorts World has a bit of everything.

The State Hotel
The State Hotel

The State, Seattle

Want to spend your time away walking by the water? Right in the heart of downtown Seattle — and steps from the historic Pike Place Market — is the cozy State Hotel. Not only are there shops, restaurants and sights to see in just a few blocks, it’s also walkable to both the Link train station and the Seattle monorail station. Hot tip: Make a reservation at Ben Paris, the restaurant located inside the lobby; it’s much more than “a hotel restaurant,” and the brunch is a must.

For East Coasters

For New Yorkers who don’t want to leave the city, a staycation at the Pendry Manhattan West or the Smyth Tribeca could be the perfect de-stresser. If willing to travel a little more, look to the Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa in the Hamptons or the Newbury Boston. Plus, Malta-based Corinthia which runs some of the best international hotels, has an upcoming spot to watch for in New York City — The Surrey, A Corinthia Hotel.

For quick trips within striking distance of the Big Apple, here are two top options:

Silvestre, Costa Rica

With nine grand residences, Silvestre in Nosara is for those searching for luxury and sophistication while also feeling like they’re at home. A pricy option, but most residences sleep multiple people and include breakfast, airport transfers, private gardens, kitchen, washer and dryers and saunas.

If staying elsewhere in Costa Rica — such as Tamarindo, home to Jardín del Edén Boutique Hotel — visiting the Sibou Spa is an absolute must. It offers a dozen treatment options and a secluded forest atmosphere, where you can end the day with an outdoor lunch, glass of wine and a dip in the saltwater pool.

The Chanler, Rhode Island

Speaking of luxury, this Newport hotel is perfect if you’re looking for “Gilded Age” vibes. The Chanler is the only resort on the Cliff Walk, with waterfront views from its 20 guest rooms and villa, creating some of the finest lodging in the area. Each room — including the Nantucket Ocean Villa and the Williamsburg Room — is furnished to fit the historical period.

Still not sure where to go? It’s worth looking into Getaway, the health and wellness hospitality group with tiny cabins located outside of major cities. The company has 30 outposts and 1,210 cabins — focused on allowing guests the opportunity to disconnect with technology. With locations outside of Atlanta, Austin, Charlotte, Chicago, Houston, Nashville, St. Louis and many more metropolitan areas, the company also launched Getaway Retreats for big groups looking to inspire creativity.

Here are just a couple of the most beautiful and sought-after locations outside of the U.S.

Tropea, Italy

If you’re planning a beach getaway in Italy — and maybe have already tried the touristy Amalfi Coast — head to Tropea, one of the most beautiful villages in the country and a plethora of delicious food. With multiple high-end and more affordable places to stay, a few favorites include Hotel Tirreno in Calabria, Rocca Della Sena, Villa Paola and La Dolce Vita Tropea. Plus, take a cruise to Stromboli, one of the Aeolian Islands off Sicily and get a bite at Osservatorio, where you can watch an active volcano.

Paris

A five-star option, Hôtel de Crillon overlooks the Place de la Concorde, and has elegance that is impossible not to soak in. It dates back to the 18th century and reopened in 2017 after four years of restoration. Located in the heart of Paris, the hotel is minutes from the city’s most iconic sites. Others to check out in the same area include Lutetia Paris and Le Meurice — even if just for a delicious meal. If you’re looking to stay in the Latin Quarter, the Hôtel Dame des Arts — and its gorgeous rooftop bar — is the place to be.
