A local resident has slammed Devon County Council over the introduction of double-yellow lines on a scenic road leading down to a pretty beach, claiming they have "ruined the environment". They hit back after spotting the newly marked lines on Bovisand Lane, near Plymouth, stating their belief that the intervention was "unnecessary" and a simply a "waste of money".

The road down to Bovisand beach falls within the jurisdiction of Devon County Council, extending beyond the Plymouth boundary into South Hams.

A Devon County Council spokesperson told PlymouthLive: "This site was identified in our last county review of parking restrictions.

"Previously restrictions were indicated by signing alone, however the restrictions were not well understood by all motorists and lead to complaints of parking wherever the road was wide enough. The double yellow lines we have added makes the restrictions clearer."

The resident - who asked not to be named - said in response to the council's explanation: "I have walked Bovisand Lane many times but have never seen it blocked by parked cars. Of course that isn't concrete proof but if the council have evidence let's see it."

"On busy days traffic can get congested as it's very narrow in places and sometimes cars meet in parts where passing isn't possible but not because the road is blocked by parked cars. Evidence - photographic or from the police - backing up that claim seems absent."

The resident said they believed it cost several thousand pounds to paint the lines and while it was "not a fortune" they added that "when Devon County Council is struggling to fill potholes it seems a waste of money."

"I've been told that emergency vehicles have been held up by badly parked cars but have seen no evidence of this. Perhaps the council would like to provide some evidence. I suspect they can't. Good or better signage in the passing spots would have been sufficient."

"Most of our population can read! Vandalising the lane with yellow lines, ruining a beautiful view is over the top."
