Lochlann Murray tributes paid as GAA club suspend activities following Cliffs of Moher tragedy

A South Armagh GAA club has suspended all club activities as a mark of respect following the untimely and tragic death of Lochlann Murray.

Silverbridge GFC said the entire community are in mourning following the sudden death of their underage star last weekend.

The 17-year-old died on Friday, July 5 after falling off the Cliffs of Moher , Co Clare. A search and rescue operation began on Saturday with a specialist team arriving from Co Monaghan. Lochlann’s body was recovered from the area on Sunday by the Rockcorry Divers and the North Coast Search and Recovery team.

In a statement posted on social media on Tuesday, Silverbridge said Lochlann had “a great sense of humour and an infectious smile” and have halted all club activities until after his funeral.

“Our entire community are mourning the tragic death of Lochlann Murray RIP,” the statement read.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his mother and father Jodi and Kieran, sister Hannah. Grandparents Lochlann and Maeve Murray and Jean Viau. Lochlann’s extended family, friends and teammates.

“Lochlann has been part of this year’s minor team and in recent years has won the Minor Championship, U16 league and U15 shield. Lochlann was affectionately known to his friends and everyone around the club as Locky.

“Locky had a great sense of humour and an infectious smile, he always enjoyed the craic with his team mates and coaches. Anyone that knew Locky was very lucky, he made everyone feel valued, always acknowledging you if you met him.

"There are simply no words to describe the devastating loss of Lochlann, may he Rest in Peace. Please keep Lochlann and his family and friends in your prayers. As a mark of respect all club activities have been suspended.”

Several other South Armagh GAA clubs also offered their condolences online with Crossmaglen Rangers posting: “The entire Cross Rangers club send our deepest condolences to Lochlann’s Mammy and Daddy, Jodi and Kieran, sister Hannah, Grandparents and extended family and our fellow Gaels, Silverbridge GFC on your devastating loss. We will remember Lochlann and the Murray family in our prayers. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”

Dromintee GAC added: “Committee and members of Dromintee GAC are saddened to learn of the passing of Lochlann Murray. We extended our deepest sympathy to our fellow Gaels in Silverbridge GFC and to Lochlann’s parents, sister, family and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”

Killeavy GAC posted: “All at Killeavy GAA are saddened to hear the devastating news of the passing of Lochlann Murray. We extended our heartfelt sympathies to his family, friends and our fellow Gaels at Silverbridge GFC. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”

Requiem Mass for Lochlann Murray will be held on Thursday, July 11 at St Brigid’s Church, Glassdrummond at 11am with burial afterwards in Creggan Cemetery.
