London remains the UK’s burglary capital with a staggering 16 of the top 20 hotspots found in the city.

Residents in the London Borough of Redbridge are living in the area most afflicted by burglary, according to new data.

Whetstone, Chadwell Heath and Clayhall are all in the top five, with only Leeds, at four, outside of the capital.

Last year’s top burglary location, Dulwich, has fallen to number nine on the list, after its burglary rate fell by 29 per cent.

MoneySuperMarket, which released the data, analysed 1.8 million home insurance quotes on its website between January 2015 and December 2016 as part of its annual survey.

It found that in Redbridge the overall claim rate is at 54.7 per 1,000 quotes this year.

Cambridge’s CB5 area has climbed to number 12 in the charts with 41.8 burglary claims per 1,000 quotes.

According to the data, shameless burglars are more active during the winter months when Christmas presents are often in the house.

However, MoneySuperMarket claims Britons are seeking to insure more valuables than ever as they buy the latest gadgets.

The data suggests that the average home has £4,192 of high value items worth in excess of £1,500 on their policies.

Bideford in Devon and Monkseaton in North Tyneside have the lowest rate of areas with at least one burglary at 0.9 claims per 1,000.

David Cameron’s old constituency of Whitney, Oxfordshire (OX20) had just 1.3 claims per 1,000 quotes.

Kevin Pratt, consumer affairs expert at MoneySuperMarket, said: “Burglars are interested in two things: where should I go to find stuff worth stealing and where am I least likely to get caught?

“Our findings suggest busy urban areas are the biggest targets for theft, but those who call leafy suburbia home should also be aware of the risks associated with the higher anticipated value of their belongings.”
