Manchester United icon Gary Neville has highlighted Casemiro as being to blame for Arsenal's opener at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

The Gunners took the lead in routine circumstances as Kai Havertz's cross was easily turned home from close range by Leandro Trossard. On the replay, it was clear the makeshift United backline were too slow to spot the danger and Neville was quick to pinpoint Casemiro's fault in the goal.

Neville said on Sky Sports' co-commentary: "Casemiro has taken some criticism in the last couple of weeks, and he's going to get a little bit more. Brilliant from Arsenal.

"Those Arsenal fans in that far corner will have recognised it's been a difficult first 20 minutes. But, he goes to split wide to get on the ball, Casemiro.

"As soon as Onana goes that way, Casemiro has to get up. Look at him jog.

"Then as you see the ball getting played that down that far side, he has to get out quicker than that to play him offside. Once he doesn't, he's in trouble."

Casemiro has been under plenty of scrutiny after his calamitous performance in the 4-0 defeat at Crystal Palace on Monday night. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher insisted that Casemiro should look to be leaving for the MLS or the Saudi Pro League after the performance at Selhurst Park but Ian Wright argued that this was disrespectful to the former Real Madrid man.

Currently, Casemiro is being forced to play at centre-back due to United's horrendous injury woes in defence. Lisandro Martinez returned to training this week but it was too soon to reintroduce him to the team.

Thus, Ten Hag has selected Jonny Evans and Casemiro as the centre-back partnership. Scott McTominay also has some experience in defence but has been chosen to play in midfield.
