Lorraine Kelly has called social media 'dark'. (ITV)

Lorraine Kelly has announced that she is quitting X, formerly known as Twitter, for the foreseeable future.

In a post on the social media website, Kelly confirmed her exit and gave her reason why.

In what may be her final post, the Scottish broadcaster wrote: "Morning. Having a twitter break - its all gone a bit dark - find me on instagram @lorrainekellysmith for mostly cute photos of my dog."

A number of fans pleaded with Kelly not to leave the social media site with one posting: "Noooooo don't go away Lorraine! Please stay here on twitter!"

Kelly did not expand upon her reasons for leaving X but the move comes just a day after she detailed her experience with Russell Brand on a late night chat show where he called her a "slut".

Brand — who has been accused of rape and sexual assault following a joint investigation by The Times and Channel 4 and denies allegations against him — appeared on The Graham Norton Show alongside Kelly in 2007.

In the clip from the show, Brand touches Kelly's leg and then says "You’re wearing suspenders, Jesus! I’ve bitten off more than I can chew, I’m out of my depth."

Brand then adds: "Yeah, so I have been in other films but it doesn’t seem so important now that I know Lorraine Kelly is a slut."

Kelly commented on the clip during her ITV talk show and said: "Now look that is uncomfortable to watch now, that really is. Also for the record, I was not wearing suspenders at all. Everybody was laughing, I was laughing."

She continued: "I must admit, it’s difficult, looking back on it now I probably would have said something. But it’s an entertainment show, it’s late night, that was his schtick. That’s what he was not just doing, but actively encouraged to do, and that’s a scandal."
