We've all heard of the Boat Race – the televised battle between rowing crews from Cambridge and Oxford that takes place on the Thames every year. But depending on how long you've lived in Cambridge, the name might bring to mind memories of nights out at a pub by the same name.

The Boat Race was a pub on East Road that closed 20 years ago in 2004. At that point, the building had already been through a few iterations – it was previously the Waggon & Horses, and then The Falcon.

The building itself dates back to 1827, two years before the first Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge. It has striking arched windows and had a green and gold theme during its years as The Boat Race.

Some incredible acts played at The Boat Race, including famous names like Oasis, Kasabian, Snow Patrol, and Placebo. The setlist for an Oasis gig at the pub on May 11, 1994, included 'Live Forever' and a cover of The Beatles' song 'I Am The Walrus'.

Locals who loved The Boat Race remember "the sweat, the smoke, and the atmosphere". It closed before the smoking ban came into force in 2007, so the experience of going to see a band at The Boat Race was very different to nights at The Six Six, the bar which now occupies the building.

The final band to play at The Boat Race was The Broken Family Band, according to Repeat Fanzine. At the final gig, the pub's manager Stan was handed a card signed by locals and bands before the pub closed its doors for the last time.
