'I love the club' Willie Peters on Hull KR future amid NRL return speculation

Willie Peters has admitted he has ambitions to return to the NRL one day - but insists he is happy in England and would be open to extending his stay at Hull KR right now.

The Robins boss has done an excellent job at Craven Park, with Rovers making great strides towards establishing themselves as one of the elite teams in the competition. They reached the Challenge Cup final and play-off semi-finals in his first year at the helm while they are in the last four of the cup once again this year.

In the league, they are just two points behind Super League leaders St Helens having put Super League and World Club Challenge holders Wigan Warriors to the sword last week.

Peters' contract does not expire until the end of 2025 but following the departure of Jason Demetriou at South Sydney Rabbitohs, it has resulted in some suggesting they may take a look at the Australian, who was an assistant coach at the club in 2019.

But when asked if he'd be interested in extending his stay in east Hull, Peters said: "Certainly but that's a decision for the club and myself to look at.

"I love the club, what we're doing and where we're heading. It's an honour to be able to coach this group. I love coming to work every day. It's a special club with a lot of special people. The players certainly drive the environment we've got here.

"It's something we'll certainly look at. When you've got a wife and two young boys, that's the major part you've got to get right first. If they're not happy, naturally I'm not happy and can't work properly. Family is number one and rugby league is a close second - but don't tell them that! They love it in England and everyone is happy at the moment."

However, Peters did not shy away from the fact that he would like to return down under at some point in his career.

"My contract is up to 2025 and I'm very happy at the club," he said. My family and I love the club and are very happy here. Do I have (NRL) aspirations down the track? Yeah, I do. But I've got a job here that I want to fulfil - and hopefully I can fulfil that for a while.

"There's a vision at the club that I share. We've started a job and I'd like to stay and finish it. My whole goal is to leave the club in a better spot. The club was in a good place when I arrived but I'd love to be able to leave it in a great place. If you reach great, hopefully trophies come with that."
