Love Island stars told about Sophie Gradon's death

The Love Island contestants have been informed of former star Sophie Gradon's tragic death.

Sophie, who appeared in the 2016 series of the ITV2 reality competition show (alongside Olivia Buckland and Alex Bowen), was confirmed to have passed away yesterday (June 21) aged just 32.

"The Islanders have been made aware off camera," an ITV spokesperson told Digital Spy.

The Sun is also reporting that Ellie Brown, who is friends with Sophie, has decided to stay in the villa.

Thursday's episode paid tribute to Sophie with a message "in loving memory" of the star, as well a brief moment of silence in her honour.

Earlier that day, the official Love Island Twitter account shared that their "deepest sympathies and thoughts" were with Gradon's family and friends on behalf of the whole production team.

Presenter Caroline Flack called the star's death "so sad" in her own tweet, adding: "Such a beautiful soul .... such a beautiful smile ...thoughts and love with friends and family."

Northumbria Police confirmed Gradon's death in a statement on Thursday, saying: "At about 8.27pm yesterday (June 20) police attended a property in Medburn, Ponteland, where sadly a 32-year-old woman was found deceased.

"There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding her death. A report will now be prepared for the coroner."
