Loyle Carner review: A pulsating performance after a weather delay at Halifax Piece Hall

Acclaimed hip hop artist Loyle Carner delivered an electrifying performance on another sensational night at The Piece Hall on Tuesday evening.

Last night’s headline set was delayed by 20 minutes due to the threat of a storm, staff professionally and calmly provided support. The bars were temporarily closed, much to the disappointment of fans, however, thankfully the weather-threat was short-lived.

Once the clouds left the scene one of the UK’s brightest young stars took to the stage for a night the sell-out 6,000-crowd will not forget.

I must admit initially I was sceptical whether Loyle Carner's laidback and mellow yet thought provoking music would suit the venue, merely as any other acts I'd seen at the Piece Hall previously had been of high energy.

However, I was soon made to eat my words when he burst to the stage with his first track and filled the unique venue.

He apologised for the delay after the first track saying 'sorry we're late man, but we made it!' to the sound of cheers from the audience before he went on to declare it was his first time in Halifax.

Carner’s set was lfilled with crowd favourites including Speed of Plight, Hate, Ain't Nothing Changed, Yesterday, Loose Ends before a stunning finale of Ottolenghi.

The set was entertaining, intense and emotion driven, his tracks fuelled with deep political and personal thoughts. He spoke openly about his children and about how toxic masculinity affected his childhood.

He really made the audience feel as though they had got to know him as an artist on a personal level and the whole show felt very intimate, without compromising on the entertainment and energy.

The stars were out in force last night, among those enjoying the show were cast members from ITV soap Emmerdale.

The Dales truly moved to Halifax for the night as Jurell Carter (Nate Robinson), Eden Taylor Draper (Belle Dingle), Natalie Ann Jamieson (Amy Wyatt), Emma Atkins (Charity Dingle) and Jeff Hordley (Cain Dingle) all watched on at the historic Halifax venue.

Towards the end of the show, Carner told the crowd: "This one of the best shows we've played in a very long time. I’m truly lost for words. It’s beyond my wildest expectations, beyond my wildest dreams – thank you Halifax.”
