'Luther' to get a movie spin-off at Netflix

Luther fans have been given the exciting news that Idris Elba's detective is set to return for a movie spin-off.

The actor, who also starred in The Wire, is known for his role as London detective John Luther and the long-awaited film of the BBC TV series has now been confirmed by Netflix.

Offering only the briefest of details on the joint project with the BBC, Netflix tweeted: "LUTHER NEWS Idris Elba will reprise his iconic role — joined by Cynthia Erivo and Andy Serkis — in a new feature film written by series creator Neil Cross."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will begin shooting in November.

But Luther fans had just one burning question that they needed to be answered - will Ruth Wilson return as Alice Morgan?

One fan tweeted: "Love this! But will Ruth be there too?? Can’t imagine Luther without Alice."

Someone else commented: "Yeah we need Alice back for it to be proper Luther."

Alice featured in the TV series as Luther's nemesis and later a love interest, but after appearing to be killed off in series three the psychotic genius later made a shock return.

Luther is famed for its grim and grisly storylines of murder and crime in London and has run for five series since it first aired in 2010.

It has earned Critics Choice, Golden Globes and SAG awards for Elba, as well as Emmy nominations.

The few plot details available for the film reveal that it will be a continuation of the story from the TV series and that Serkis will play the criminal mastermind being hunted, while Erivo will star as a rival detective to Luther.

Since starring in Luther, Elba has also featured in TV series Turn Up Charlie and In The Long Run as well as films including The Suicide Squad and Fast & Furious: Hobbs and Shaw.

Meanwhile, Wilson is known for her roles in The Affair, His Dark Materials and Mrs Wilson.
