Luther's Idris Elba stars in first-look at brand new thriller series Hijack

A first look at Luther star Idris Elba in new Apple TV+ thriller Hijack has been unveiled.

The actor stars as an accomplished business negotiator called Sam Nelson who finds himself on a hijacked plane on its way to London, and must use his skills to save the passengers.

The first pictures show Elba's character sitting in a first class seat, while we also get a first glimpse of co-star Archie Panjabi as Zahra Ghafoor, a counter-terrorism officer.

Hijack, which is due to debut on June 28, is described as "a tense thriller that follows the journey of a hijacked plane as it makes its way to London over a seven hour flight, and authorities on the ground scramble for answers".

It will also star Christine Adams, Max Beesley, Eve Myles, Neil Maskell, Jasper Britton, Harry Michell, Aimee Kelly, Mohamed Elsandel and Ben Miles.

Elba is also executive producing the series, which comes from Lupin's George Kay and will be directed by The Wrong Mans' Jim Field Smith.

Meanwhile, last month, Elba responded to criticism of recent comments he made, in which he said he no longer described himself as a "Black actor", telling The Guardian: "I feel as I get older – I’m 50 now – we all have fears of saying too much, oversharing and whatnot.

"And in this day and age, it’s really difficult to have an opinion if you’re in the public eye because it gets overly scrutinized, taken out of context, thrown into some sort of bullshit, zeitgeisty social media argument."

Elba added: "Me saying I don’t like to call myself a Black actor is my prerogative. That’s me, not you. So for you to turn around and say to me, I’m 'denying my Blackness.' On what grounds? Did you hear that? Where am I denying it? And what for? It’s just stupid. Whatever."

Hijack will premiere on Apple TV+ on June 28.
