A £195m cruise ship has stopped in Plymouth on its way from Portugal to Belgium with passengers enjoying a look around the city. The 11-deck Seabourn Sojourn dropped anchor in Plymouth Sound at 8am today and will leave at 6pm for its next stop in the Isle of Wight.

The 650ft long vessel carries between 450 and 540 passengers and 330 crew members. Visitors were welcomed when they arrived at the Barbican Landing Stage for a look around.

Jon Walton, chief executive of Plymouth Waterfront Partnership, said: “On behalf of the businesses and stakeholders of the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership we welcome guests and crew of the Seabourn Sojourn to Britain's Ocean City. We do apologise for the slightly poor weather, but it is forecast to improve throughout the day.

“However our traders always provide a sunny welcome and we are sure that everyone will enjoy a wonderful sojourn in Plymouth. Huge thanks again to our wonderful cruise volunteers led by the fabulous Doug and Annemarie Kerr, we could not do this without them.”

The Bahamas-flagged ship, built in 2010, has 225 cabins and operator Seabourn Cruises said: “Seabourn Sojourn enchants her guests with an array of public areas scaled to encourage a relaxed sociability.”

It is the sister of Seabourn Odyssey and Seabourn Quest. Other ships in the Seabourn fleet have stopped in Plymouth. Seabourn Ovation visited Britain’s Ocean City last year. And in May the £172m “mega yacht” is Seabourn Venture brought 300 tourists and more than 100 crew to spend their cash in the city

Seabourn Cruises said: “One of the most unusual features of Seabourn Sojourn and her sisters is Seabourn Square, an ingenious ‘living room’ that replaces the traditional cruise ship lobby with a welcoming lounge filled with easy chairs, sofas and cocktail tables; making it more inviting and relaxing on a small ship cruise. An enclave in its centre houses knowledgeable concierges discreetly seated at individual desks.”

Seabourn Sojourn’s arrival, despite bad weather, is even more welcome as a scheduled stop by another vessel was called off last month. Silver Spirit did not call at Plymouth because of the weather in mid June. A visit by Star Legend had already been cancelled.

Westward Shipping News, which charts arrivals and departures in Plymouth, was delighted by today’s visit and said: “The enchanting Seabourn Sojourn cruise ship arrived in the Sound this morning defying the mist and rain dropping anchor near the Plymouth Breakwater. The liner is on a day visit until 6pm.”

There are still another five cruise ships due to visit Plymouth this year, starting with Silver Spirit on July 27. Ambience is due on August 1, Amadea on September 14, Le Dumont D’Urville on September 20 and Artania on October 15.
