M&S shoppers have been left unimpressed by a £2 food item that they can usually get free of charge from the chippy.

Let's face it, us Brits love a good chippy dinner, whether it be a classic fish supper, battered sausage or chips with salt and vinegar. Many foodies will also know that the 'scraps' are often one of the best parts.

These pieces of deep fried batter are still served in some fish & chip shops across the UK, where they are often free of charge. However, Marks and Spencer has also introduced them to their food hall in 50g tubs for £2, and not shoppers are happy.

After a shopper spotted a tub of scraps in Marks and Spencer for a whopping £2, their post on X (formerly Twitter) went viral, reports The Mirror. The original poster, Jason Reid, shared a snap of the scraps and wrote: "*Rubs temples*." He added: "TWO C***ING QUID. They were free when I was a kid."

Other users quickly flocked to the comments section to express their own thoughts on the usually-free addition. Some said that M&S' scraps "must be aimed at middle classes" with the price that they were being charged.

One shopper fumed: "What the actual f***? Rip off!" A second exclaimed: "At two quid for scraps, it seems they must be aimed at the middle classes."

While another angry shopper added: "£40 per kilo of BATTER. Christ."

Meanwhile, others also agreed that they could still get the scraps for "free" when they visited their local chippy. One wrote: "They're still free in the chippy - £2 wow."

While another agreed: "They're still free at the chippy and I bet they taste better." A third also said: "Me too. We'd go in and just ask for a bag of scraps. No chips. If they had loads they'd give us some."

M&S launched the Chip Shop Scraps back in 2018, when an 80g pot cost £1.08. A spokesperson for M&S told the Daily Record: "Our chip shop scraps have proved popular with customers up and down the country since launching back in 2018. Many enjoy as part of their chippy tea, and we know some customers enjoy sprinkling across a variety of meals."
