The M27 was closed last night for emergency barrier repairs following a serious crash on Saturday.

According to National Highways, the westbound carriageway between junctions 5 for Southampton Airport and 8 for Bursledon were shut between 9.45pm yesterday and 12.45am today.

This was due to damage which occurred during a serious crash on Saturday evening.

The van then collided with a police car heading to another job - with eyewitnesses posting on X saying the police car looked 'smashed up'.

A 55-year-old man from Southampton was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving a vehicle while unfit through drugs.

He was released under investigation while police continue their enquiries.
