M5 closed in both directions after car overturns in crash

The M5 was closed in both directions near Bristol following a serious crash. The motorway has been closed between junctions 18 (Avonmouth) and 19 (Portishead) following the collision.

Traffic cameras show a car flipped on to its roof. There are long queues of traffic in both directions as a result of the closure.

Initially, lanes two, three and four (of four) heading Northbound were closed, while lane four (of four) is also closed on the southbound side. Now police have confirmed the motorway was closed in both directions.

Avon and Somerset Police said: “The M5 has been closed in both directions between junctions 18 (Avonmouth) and 19 (Portishead) following a collision. Emergency services are at the scene and motorists are urged to avoid the area.”

They added: "The southbound carriageway of the M5 between junctions 18 (Avonmouth) and 19 (Portishead) has now been fully re-opened following the earlier collision."

There are also long delays due to people slowing to look at accident on the opposite side and earlier lane closures on M5 Southbound at J18 M49. Congestion to J17 (Cribbs Causeway).
