M5 closed for an hour amid concern for welfare call-out

A person has been taken to hospital after an early-morning incident on the M5 in Somerset. Emergency services were called to the motorway, between Bridgwater and Taunton following reports of concern for welfare on the road.

A stretch of the motorway was closed for around an hour while Avon and Somerset Police, the South Western Ambulance Service and Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were at the scene. One person was taken to hospital at the scene.

A spokesperson for the police force said: "Police were called at 4.35am today (20 May) to a report of a concern for welfare between junctions 24 (Bridgwater) and 25 (Taunton) of the M5. Officers attended alongside the ambulance and fire services and one person was taken to hospital. The M5 was closed in both directions for approximately one hour."

Traffic was stopped in both directions between junctions 24 and 25 for around an hour. National Highways said: "Traffic has been STOPPED on the #M5 in both directions between J24 ( #Bridgwater ) and J25 ( #Taunton ) due to an @ASPolice led incident."

The road reopened shortly before 6am, Highways said in an update. "Police incident concluded and traffic released in both directions on the #M5 between J24 ( #Bridgwater ) and J25 ( #Taunton ). Please allow extra time for the remaining delays on approach to clear."
