A dangerous driver hit speeds of more than 100mph during a police chase on the M5 - ignoring an amber weather warning and treacherous road conditions. Robin Freeman put his foot down when police tried to stop him near Tiverton.

It happened while a Met Office weather alert was in place for ice and sleet. Freeman, 30, powered his VW Golf through slush and, in a final desperate effort to get away, turned off his headlights and mounted a grass verge.

He was only caught after his tyres were punctured by a stinger and he was boxed in by a police vehicle. When police searched the car they found crack cocaine in a bag in the footwell.

Freeman said: "Sorry, I was trying to roll a fag and speak to my missus on the phone." He was jailed for 12 months at Exeter Crown Court after admitting dangerous driving and possession of crack cocaine.

The incident happened at 6am on March 8, 2023. Police had already tried and failed to stop Freeman as he bombed down the M5 before he reached Junction 27.

It was sleeting heavily and much of the carriageway covered in hazardous slush when another police car put on its blue lights and signalled him to stop. Freeman sped off, forcing other drivers out of the way and mounting the grass verge on the central reservation to get past.

At one point he nudged a police car that was travelling in front of him, causing minor damage. Even after the stinger had deflated his tyres and smoke was pouring from the Golf, Freeman still travelled at between 60-70mph.

After eight minutes a police car intentionally nudge the Golf and brought it to a stop. Freeman was arrested at the scene.

The defendant, of Charlotte Street, Plymouth, has ten previous offences to his name but nothing for bad driving. Francesca Whebell, defending, said he was leading a chaotic lifestyle at the time and taking drugs. He has complex PTSD and is sorry for the incident.

Judge James Adkin jailed Freeman and disqualified him from driving.
