M5 World Championship: Geek Fam ID, Deus Vult, and Burmese Ghouls round out Playoff-qualified teams

Eight teams remain in contention for this year's Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) world title after the M5 World Championship Group Stage concluded on Thursday (7 December).

Indonesia's Geek Fam ID, Russia's Deus Vult, and Myanmar's Burmese Ghouls claimed the last three remaining Playoff spots in a drama-filled final day for the Group Stage. Meanwhile, Mongolia's Team Lilgun and Malaysia's HomeBois were eliminated.

Here's how the final day of the M5 World Championship Group Stage played out:

Geek Fam ID, Deus Vult survive drama-filled Group D

There was a lot of drama surrounding the final match of Group D between HomeBois and TheOhioBrothers.

While TheOhioBrothers were already eliminated, HomeBois were still fighting for a Playoff spot. Should HomeBois win this match, then there would have been a three-way tiebreaker between them, Geek Fam ID, and Deus Vult for the group's two Playoff spots.

However, Geek Fam ID and Deus Vult should be very grateful for TheOhioBrothers as the North American squad managed to defeat HomeBois to prevent a chaotic tiebreaker scenario.

TheOhioBrothers took a convincing 13-minute win in game one before HomeBois tied things up in a 28-minute marathon in game two. Game three then saw TheOhioBrothers defeat their opponents in 18 minutes to go out of M5 in style and send Geek Fam ID and Deus Vult to the Playoffs.

Geek Fam ID took the first seed of the group with a 4-3 record while Deus Vult settled for second with a 5-4 line.

Burmese Ghouls claim final Playoff spots in Group C

The final match of Group C saw group leader AP.Bren take on Wildcard winner Team Lilgun, who needed to avoid getting swept for a chance to qualify for the Playoffs.

Unfortunately for the Mongolian squad, their run came to an end as AP.Bren took care of business in a 17-minute game one and a 22-minute game two. It completed a perfect run through the Group Stage for AP.Bren, making them one of two teams in M5 alongside ONIC Esports to win all their Group Stage games.

Group A:

1. ONIC Esports: 6-0 (Playoff-qualified)

2. See You Soon: 4-2 (Playoff-qualified)

3. Triple Esports: 2-5 (Eliminated)

4. Bigetron Sons: 1-6 (Eliminated)

Group B:

1. Fire Flux Esports: 5-2 (Playoff-qualified)

2. Blacklist International: 4-3 (Playoff-qualified)

3. Team SMG: 3-5 (Eliminated)

4. RRQ Akira: 3-5 (Eliminated)

Group C:

1. AP.Bren: 6-0 (Playoff-qualified)

2. Burmese Ghouls: 3-4 (Playoff-qualified)

3. Team Flash: 3-5 (Eliminated)

4. Team Lilgun: 3-5 (Eliminated)

Group D:

1. Geek Fam ID: 4-3 (Playoff-qualified)

2. Deus Vult: 5-4 (Playoff-qualified)

3. TheOhioBrothers: 3-5 (Eliminated)

4. HomeBois: 4-4 (Eliminated)

With the conclusion of the Group Stage, the Philippines' AP.Bren and Blacklist International, Indonesia's ONIC Esports and Geek Fam ID, Cambodia's See You Soon, Turkey's Fire Flux Esports, Myanmar's Burmese Ghouls, and Russia's Deus Vult have advanced to the Playoffs.

Those eight teams have also guaranteed themselves at least US$30,000 in winnings. Of course, they have their sights set on the grand prize of US$300,000 and the M5 World Championship title.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia's Triple Esports, asd, Singapore's Team Flash, and North America's TheOhioBrothers bow out in 9th-12th place and will take home US$20,000 in consolation.

Brazil's Bigetron Sons, asd, Mongolia's Team Lilgun, and Malaysia's HomeBois exit in 13th-16th place and have earned US$15,000 for their efforts.

The M5 World Championship Group Stage took place from 2 to 7 December at the EVM Convention Center in Metro Manila.

The Group Stage saw the 16 teams divided into four groups of four teams each, where they competed in a single round robin with best-of-three matches. The Top 2 teams from each group advanced to the Playoffs while the bottom two teams were eliminated.

The M5 World Championship Playoffs will follow a double elimination format with all matches being a best-of-five except for the Grand Finals, which will be a full best-of-seven series.

The Knockout Stage will also be held in two phases. The first phase will be held in the EMV Convention Center from 9 to 12 December and includes the upper bracket quarterfinals (9 to 10 December), the first round of the lower bracket (11 December), and the upper bracket semifinals (12 December).

The second phase of the Knockout Stage will be held in the Rizal Memorial Coliseum from 15 to 17 December. It will include the lower bracket quarterfinals (15 December), the lower bracket semifinals and upper bracket finals (16 December), as well as the lower bracket finals and Grand Finals (17 December).
