M6 and A590 closures and roadworks to be wary of this week

As the summer holidays loom and the weather gets nicer, you might be planning day trips out and weekends away.

Whilst you may know that long journeys need to be planned ahead, it's good to get an idea of your route in case planned roadworks and maintenance could throw a spanner in your plans. Although some travel disruptions can't be foreseen, handily, some can.

National Highways have an update of roadworks and maintenance schemes in the Lancashire and Cumbria areas which could cause disruption to your journey. These include plans on the M6 and A590 this week.

M6 between junctions 43 to 44

Essential upgrades to the centre reserve barrier on the M6 are being made between junctions 43 and 44. The existing barriers along the motorway have reached the end of their serviceable life, meaning an upgrade is necessary.

To keep the travelling public and our staff safe while barrier work is underway, lane 3 will be closed on both carriageways of the M6. A 60mph speed restriction on this section of the M6 will also be in effect for the duration of the scheme.

A590 Foulshaw Moss

More than £2million is being invested in safety improvements on the A590 between Foulshaw Moss and junction 36, Crooklands, on the M6. Work started on Monday, February 19 and is expected to continue.

The eastbound carriageway between Low Levens and Brettargh Holt roundabout has been strengthened and resurfaced overnight, meaning closures have had to occur. From 8pm to 6am, A590 eastbound traffic has been diverted via the A6 to junction 35 of the M6.

During the day, the A590 has been open but under a 40mph speed limit. In March, work started on safety improvements for the A590 between Brettargh Holt roundabout and its junction with the M6.

Road layout designs will allow drivers in both lanes on the A590 to take a right turn on to the M6, reducing queues at peak times.
