Motorists are being warned to brace themselves for another series of overnight closures on a busy stretch of the M6 motorway near Lancashire.

National Highways is gearing up to put the finishing touches on the Warrington to Wigan upgrade. The agency has announced the upcoming dates for engineering works, which aim to wrap up the resurfacing efforts integral to the motorway enhancement project.

The scheme is set to bolster the M6 with additional emergency areas, cutting-edge technology, and an extra lane running in both directions between junctions 21a and 26. Moreover, the overhaul includes revamping the carriageway's surface across stretches between the Croft and Orrell interchanges.

With most of the daytime operations now behind them, National Highways is shifting focus to night-time activities. These include setting up gantry signs, other signage, and laying down the new surface for what will become lanes two and three.

A spokesperson from National Highways conveyed: "Due to the size of the equipment required for the resurfacing there will be a series of 9pm to 6am overnight carriageway closures over the next few weeks."

The scheduled closures are:

  • M6 northbound junction 21a to 22 – closed Thursday 18 and Friday 19 July.

  • M6 southbound junction 22 to 21a - closed Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 July

  • M6 northbound junction 22 to 23 - closed Thursday 11 and Tuesday 16 July

  • M6 southbound junction 23 to 22 – closed Wednesday 10 and Friday 12 July

  • M6 northbound junction 23 to 26 - closed Saturday morning (6 July - 12.30am to 6am - timings to accommodate people leaving an event at Haydock Park late on Friday night, 5 July), Monday (8 July) and Wednesday 17 July

  • M6 southbound junction 26 to 23 - closed Tuesday (9 July)

The spokesperson added: "The precise dates and times of the work may be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. Clearly signed diversions will be in place overnight when a carriageway is closed."

Diversions will be in place.
