Magnet fishermen pulled a large machete and a jam jar lid with footballing icon George Best's face on it from a river in Kirkintilloch.

The discovery was made by members of Glasgow Magnet Fishing who were hunting for treasures in the River Kelvin on Saturday, April 27.

The group were shocked after dredging up the machete, which was long with a black handle and slightly curved blade. The weapon was scrapped after falling apart almost immediately.

The George Best memorabilia was by far the best find in the haul, reports Glasgow Live.

A number of knives were also pulled from the water.

The star is pictured on the lid wearing the iconic red of Manchester United, the club where the Northern Irishman shot to fame. It is believed the rare item was released by Cadbury Schweppes Food LTD as part of a Hartley's promotion during the 1970s.

The lid is part of a set of 12 released and is a rare collectors item. There are some famous Scottish names who also had their faces used as part of the popular promotion.

Celtic icon Jimmy Johnstone and national hero Billy Bremner are some of the other players who make up the collection.
