A major city road was closed after a police pursuit ended with wrecked cars spread all across Boundary Street in Kirkdale.

Witnesses said the police helicopter was involved at one point in an incident which saw more than half a dozen cars damaged when a suspected stolen car crashed during a police pursuit from Sefton into north Liverpool.

One eyewitness said: "There's a very large police presence on Boundary Street with police cars looking like they have been rammed and police everywhere. There are cars on top of railings... the surrounding area is taped off. It looked like police have been ramming cars... either that or a very serious police chase. There was at least five cars in one area that were involved in a single crash."

Another person said: "Rumours are a light blue Focus was being chased by police and failing to stop, resulting in the police using tactical contact during the chase. At least three or four police vehicles have been damaged and members of the public's vehicles have been damaged in the chase.

“There were loads of police on the scene, at least 20 police cars. Rush hour traffic was snarled up on Scotty Road because of the cordon. There were lots of people out in the street trying to work out what was happening. There was also a police helicopter circling overhead. We heard a car mounted the pavement. There were two damaged police cars and a couple belonging to members of the public."

A Merseyside police spokesperson said: "We can confirm that two men have been detained following an incident in Sefton and Liverpool today, Wednesday 10 July.

"At around 3.05pm, a report was received of suspicious circumstances involving a suspected stolen car in Edge Lane, Crosby.

"A pursuit of the car was authorised, supported by the National Air Police Service (NPAS) helicopter, and the car was tactically stopped on Boundary Street, Kirkdale. Two men were detained nearby and an area search is ongoing."

Another person on Boundary Street added: "It’s a big scene with police cars everywhere - it’s a busy road but traffic was backing up some way down Scotland Road. A couple of the police cars were damaged and had clearly been involved in a chase of some kind. Further round the corner on Boundary Street there were loads of police cars and traffic police inspecting the scene. It was quite an eerie atmosphere because it was really quiet in the aftermath of what looked like a serious incident."
