Major Exeter road shut after person trapped on scaffolding

An injured person became trapped on scaffolding at a property being redeveloped in Exeter. Emergency services were called to the scene on the busy Alphington Road, opposite the Seven Stars pub, at around 1.30pm to rescue the individual.

The major city route was temporarily closed while Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service rushed to the scene to recover the casualty from the height. Crews used an aerial ladder to recover the injured party, which a service spokesperson said required clearing the road.

A photo taken at the scene shows a South Western Ambulance Incident Response Unit in the road alongside the aerial ladder in front of the scaffolded house, which has no roof.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "Earlier today, Alphington Road was temporarily closed to facilitate assistance to an individual who sustained injuries and became trapped on scaffolding. The rescue required use of our aerial ladder apparatus, requiring clearance on the road."

An eyewitness told DevonLive there was an "incident response team, fire engine with crane," at the scene and the road had been closed. A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed officers had been called to assist with the incident but their help ended up not being required.
