Major Metro delays after low loader carrying digger hit A19 bridge

Metro passengers faced delays after a vehicle struck the A19 bridge.

A low loader with a digger on the back hit the bridge at around 1.50pm on Wednesday. Metro services between Wallsend and North Shields were suspended while engineers inspected the bridge's structure.

Engineers could be seen at the bridge, with services allowed to resume again just after 3pm.

A Nexus spokesperson said: “Metro services are suspended between Wallsend and North Shields due to a vehicle striking the A19 bridge. This occurred around 1.50pm.

“An inspection of the bridge’s structure needs to be carried out before services can resume.

“Metro tickets are being accepted on Go North East buses 1 and 317 in the affected area.”
