Visitors have been warned that a major road has shut at London Road Cemetery in Coventry. It closed earlier this month and will remain closed until November.

One of the major roads will remain closed to vehicles and pedestrians, said Coventry City Council. It will remain closed as part of a National Lottery-funded project to restore Paxtons Arboretum.

Commissioned by the Coventry Cemetery Committee, Paxtons Arboretum was designed by Sir Joseph Paxton in 1845. It was created to be 'not only a burial site but also a place of natural beauty for people to enjoy.'

Works to restore parts of Paxtons Arboretum will be taking place until November. Visitors will still be able to access all of the graves at London Road Cemetery, but through 'limited routes.'

A spokesman for Coventry City Council said: “One of the roads through London Road Cemetery has been temporarily closed for vehicles and pedestrians as part of a project to restore Paxtons Arboretum, which Sir Joseph Paxton was commissioned to design in 1845.

“Work will be underway across the whole area up until November but visitors can still access all graves just by slightly different routes. We would like to thank people for their patience while this important work is completed.”
