Makeover number two set for Prestwick Swimming Pool

Prestwick Swimming Pool is to receive another makeover.

It comes less than two years from a previous £300k revamp to its facilities.

Council papers show a planning application which sought permission for alterations, to allow a new external fabric upgrade to the external walls and roof. In addition, proposals were in place for a full mechanical and electrical services (M&E) upgrade.

The papers said: “Planning permission is sought for external alterations to the existing community facility, including the installation of blue cladding to the external walls, additional windows to the rear, an external plant equipment area enclosed by a 2.5 metre height timber fence and gates, and the installation of solar PV panels within the front, south facing roof plane.”

The papers acknowledge that the works would result in the loss to the public of a small area of grassed open space to the rear of the swimming pool, which is to be utilised for the external plant equipment area.

However, it is claimed that the area of land to be lost to public access is not considered to be “significant” and it is "not considered" that the amenity and recreational value of the area of a whole is adversely affected.

The papers continue: “Overall, the proposed alterations are considered to be in keeping with and subsidiary to the existing facility with regard to design and materials. As such, the proposed development is not considered to be result in a detrimental impact on either the amenity or appearance of the immediate locale.”

The green light was given for the works under delegated powers. In September 2022, Ayrshire Live told how the pool reopened following a major makeover.

Work began to expand the gym and refurbish the changing rooms and toilets in April of that year, which saw the facility closed for a number of months.

But following a £300k investment by South Ayrshire Council, the works were completed - and the venue welcomed the public back once again.

The expansion saw the gym double in size, with state-of-the-art equipment installed. Other improvements included the installation of new cubicles and lockers in the changing rooms and new toilet facilities, including an additional accessible toilet.
