A man was taken to hospital with face and head injuries after a suspected attack.

Cleveland Police was alerted to the incident by the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) just before 12.40am on Saturday morning. Members of the public found the man near the library on Hartlepool's York Road and said they believed his multiple facial and head injuries were due to an assault.

The 32-year-old man was taken by ambulance to James Cook University Hospital. Police later launched an appeal asking for anyone with information to come forward.

A force spokesperson had said: "Enquiries are ongoing and we would appeal for anyone who was in the York Road area late last night into early this morning or who has any relevant doorbell/dashcam or CCTV footage to get in touch. Please contact Cleveland Police on the 101 number quoting ref 081637."

A later update revealed an arrest had been made. The force said: "A 34-year-old man has been charged with assault, and remanded until he appears at Teesside Magistrates’ Court on Monday (6th May). This follows an incident in Hartlepool in the early hours of yesterday where a 32-year-old man was found on York Road by members of the public.

"He had sustained multiple head and facial injuries requiring hospital treatment."
