Man in 40s dies following four-vehicle crash on M58

A man in his 40s has died following a crash on the M58 motorway, involving two large goods vehicles.

At around 12.53pm yesterday (Friday, May 17), a crash involving four-vehicles happened on the M58 westbound, between M6 Orrell Interchange near Wigan and junction three for St Helens. As emergency services responded to the incident, a stretch of the motorway was fully closed off.

The crash involved four vehicles, including two articulated large goods vehicles and two cars, according to Lancashire Police. One of the car drivers died at the scene, the MEN reports.

Formal identification is yet to take place but the victim is believed to be a man in his 40s. A stretch of the motorway was closed off for the afternoon and the evening as investigations were carried out.

At around 5am, the westbound carriageway was fully re-opened once resurfacing work had taken place. Now, officers are urging any witnesses or anyone with footage to come forward.

Sergeant Matt Davidson, lead investigation officer with Lancashire Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "First and foremost, my thoughts are with the driver’s family and loved ones at this distressing time. This was a difficult and challenging scene for the emergency services who attended.

"The carriageway was closed for a substantial time while we investigated the collision and repairs were made to the road. I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage from either side of the motorway between 12:40pm and 1pm to please contact police on 101, or email SCIU@lancashire.police.uk quoting log 0620 of 17 May 2024."
