Man, 57, dies after crash involving heavy goods vehicle on the A68 in Northumberland

A man has died after a Mini and a heavy goods vehicle collided in Northumberland.

Police received a report of a two-vehicle crash on the southbound carriageway of the A68, close to Bingfield, at around 1.20pm on Friday. They were told that a Mini Clubman car had collided with a heavy goods vehicle on the road, which is north of Corbridge.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and a 57-year-old man, who was driving the Mini, was sadly pronounced dead. His family are being supported by specially-trained officers.

The driver of the heavy goods vehicle remained at the scene to assist officers with their enquiries.

Northumbria Police has launched an investigation and is appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the moments leading up to the collision to contact them.

Inspector Sarah Munnelly, of the force's Roads Policing Unit, said: "All of our thoughts are firmly with the family and loved ones of the man who has sadly passed away. This is an incredibly tragic incident and we will continue to support them in any way we can.

"An investigation has now been launched, and we are determined to establish the full circumstances surrounding the collision and the events leading to it. I urge members of the public who have information about the collision – no matter how small or insignificant they feel it may be – to contact us as soon as they can."
