Man admits killing 'hero' schoolboy on East Lancs Road

A man has admitted causing the death of a "caring" schoolboy by careless driving.

Harry Kinney-Ryan was hit by a silver Vauxhall Astra Estate on East Lancashire Road, close to the Showcase Cinema, at 7.25pm on Wednesday, December 7, 2022. Harry was rushed to Alder Hey Children's Hospital in a critical condition but died of his injuries two days later.

Craig Griffiths appeared before Liverpool Magistrates' Court on Friday, June 14 in connection with the 13-year-old's death. The 36-year-old, of Frinsted Road in Norris Green, was arraigned the count of causing death by careless/inconsiderate driving.

A spokesperson for the court confirmed Griffiths pleaded guilty to the charge. He will be sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court on Friday, July 12.

Harry's family previously issued a loving tribute to the teenager, who died a month shy of his 14th birthday.

His family said: "Harry was a loving and caring boy who loved his family and friends. He always made those around him laugh and was definitely the class clown. Harry will be deeply missed by all of his family, especially his sisters. Everyone will have their own memories of Harry and this is how we want his memory to live on.

"We cannot thank our family and friends enough for all of their support and kind words. We would also like to thank all of the amazing staff at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital who took such amazing care of Harry. Goodnight and God bless - we love you so much."

His mum Liz Ryan had earlier said in a Facebook post that they had chosen for Harry to be an organ donor. She added: "As it stands my baby is a hero. So as he grew up wishing to be a superhero my boy got exactly what he wanted."
