A man with a knife has been arrested near Buckingham Palace.

Dramatic pictures from The Mall show the man being held down by police with his hands cuffed behind his back.

It is thought he was arrested minutes before the Queen passed by.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: ‘A man has been arrested in The Mall, SW1.

‘Patrolling officers detained and arrested the man at 10:40am today. No one was injured. A knife was recovered.

‘A man has been taken to a central London police station. The incident is not believed to be terrorist-related.’

The arrests come amid a nationwide security lockdown after the terror threat was raised to critical by Theresa May.

This means a terror attack could be ‘imminent’.

Earlier, the Changing The Guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace was cancelled to redeploy police officers in the wake of the Manchester attack.

Soldiers will replace armed police at many sites under Operation Temperer, which is being enacted after security experts warned the Government another terrorist attack was more likely.
