Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany is closing in on a move to Bayern Munich, according to reports. The Guardian claims that Burnley boss Kompany is set to take over from Thomas Tuchel at Bayern with the German leaving the club at the end of the season.

It is reported that Burnley owner Alan Pace spoke with Bayern chiefs on Wednesday to thrash out compensation terms over Kompany, who was relegated with his side this season after promotion from the Championship a year ago. Bayern have sounded out multiple candidates over their impending vacancy that included an attempt to convince Tuchel to reconsider after he announced he would be leaving the German giants earlier this year.

With Tuchel overseeing a trophyless season despite the brilliance of Harry Kane and a campaign that included no League title for the first time in a dozen years, Bayern are at a crossroads and that has led them to Kompany. He was brought to Burnley by Pace two years ago to bring the club back into the Premier League and did it in style, racking up 101 points from 46 games and finishing 21 points clear of Luton Town in third place.

That led to calls from some quarters for Kompany to be considered as a Pep Guardiola heir and Chelsea have been linked with an interest in the Belgian. This season has not gone to plan, however, with Burnley ending it second bottom and eight points clear of safety with Kompany criticised for a style of football that was ill-suited to a side trying to fight off relegation.

Thus, a move for Kompany is certainly a shock and whether he will be able to deal with the pressure that will be on his shoulders as manager of a European giant remains to be seen, though he certainly took such expectations in his stride as a player with four Premier League winner's medals to show for his time at City.

Kompany will almost certainly joined in Bavaria by former City striker Craig Bellamy, who has been his assistant at Burnley since he arrived at Turf Moor in 2022.
