The 120-minute Champions League clash against Real Madrid in midweek could have a big say in Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City selection for this weekend’s FA Cup semi-final.

City faced the disappointment of exiting the competition on penalties after a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night. But they have a chance to quickie bounce back as they take on Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley Stadium.

Ahead of the game there has been doubts over the availability of Manuel Akanji, Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland with all three being taken off during extra time of the game against Real Madrid. Haaland is the biggest concern of the three with Guardiola confirming that he has a muscular injury.

In reality, even if they are deemed fit enough to take part in the game, City may opt to not risk any of the three from the start, even with the prospect of the FA Cup final on the line. The intensity of Wednesday night’s game could lead to a few changes.

Despite Ederson impressing with his performances since his return from injury, Stefan Ortega has been the cup goalkeeper this season and should get another chance in goal. With Walker’s first game back from a month out coming against Real, Rico Lewis could come back as to not push the full-back too much.

John Stones only came off the bench on Wednesday, meaning that he could come in for Akanji and play alongside Ruben Dias with Nathan Ake moving to left-back. Such is the importance of Rodri, he is one that may not be afforded a rest, while the doubt over Kebin De Bruyne could mean that Bernardo Silva retains his place in the starting XI as the more attacking midfielder with Mateo Kovacic playing alongside Rodri.

Oscar Bobb has had a breakout season and could start on the right which will afford Phil Foden a rest after he played the full 120 minutes. Jeremy Doku came on in the second half, meaning he should be fresh to try and cause problems for Chelsea down the left of the pitch.

Given the doubts over Haaland’s fitness, that gives a chance for Julian Alvarez to come in as the main striker again. The Argentine will be hoping to add to his 16 goals in all competitions so far this season.
