Newcastle United's top priority this summer is to ensure that midfielder Bruno Guimaraes stays put, despite links with Manchester City.

Since joining from Lyon in January 2022, the Brazilian international has emerged as Newcastle's key player, propelling them to Champions League qualification and the Carabao Cup final last year. If Newcastle harbour ambitions of becoming a mainstay in European competitions, they need to retain players like Guimaraes to build their team around.

The challenge for Newcastle is that the 26-year-old's current contract includes a £100million release clause. Manager Eddie Howe confirmed at season's end that the clause exists but it lapses in the final days of June.

It has now been reported that the deadline is today - Monday, June 24 - which means Newcastle will soon be in a position to demand any fee they see fit if a club shows interest in prising him away from St James' Park, reports Chronicle Live.

Several of Europe's top clubs have been linked with Guimaraes, with one club being the bookies' favourite to sign him this summer. Premier League champions Man City are believed to be the most interested in Guimaraes, with Sky Bet pricing them at 5/6 to bring him to the Etihad Stadium.

Man City are reportedly eyeing Newcastle's star midfielder, with Pep Guardiola keen to add him to his already impressive roster of midfielders including Rodri, Mateo Kovacic, Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Matheus Nunes.

Arsenal, who have shown interest in Guimaraes for some time, are the second favourites at 11/2, while PSG are a long shot at 14/1. Spanish powerhouses Real Madrid and Barcelona are priced at 16/1 and 25/1 respectively, with Manchester United also at 25/1 to secure the midfielder's services this summer.

Guimaraes is said to be content at St James' Park and is currently on duty with Brazil at the 2024 Copa America. He is expected to feature when Brazil face Costa Rica in their opening match in California in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

It appears the window for City to secure his signature could soon expire and the club may need to act quickly should they wish to secure him for the forthcoming season.
